Am I Bi-Curious or Bisexual? Navigating Your Sexuality

by | May 31, 2024 | Time 3 mins

Ever wondered if you’re bi-curious or bisexual? Trust me, you’re not alone. Many of us are figuring out which label fits best. Whether you’re exploring or already fluid, you’re part of a large group still mapping out their sexual identity. Let’s dive into the distinctions between bi-curiosity and bisexuality and how you can find where you belong on this spectrum.

Bisexuality, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is “sexual or romantic attraction to people of one’s same sex and the opposite sex.” But bisexuals see it more broadly, encompassing labels like pansexual, queer, homoflexible, and more. This broad view allows for flexibility and fluidity, acknowledging that sexuality isn’t always black and white.

On the flip side, bi-curiosity refers to a curiosity about exploring or experimenting with bisexuality. According to Merriam-Webster, a bicurious person is curious about sexual relations with a different gender than they typically prefer. Think about that moment you fantasized about making out with another guy or thought about watching gay porn just to see what it’s like.

Asking Questions

Robyn Ochs, a renowned bisexual activist, explains it well: “Bi-curious implies that a person is currently asking questions about their sexuality but doesn’t yet have the answers.” Some who identify as bicurious might later find they’re bisexual. Others may realize they’re only interested in one gender, settling as gay or straight. Bi-curiosity is about exploring feelings and attractions without the pressure of a label.

Relationships

Bisexual individuals are comfortable with sexual relationships with both genders. Bicurious folks, however, are often just considering the prospect of a same-sex experience. They might feel attracted without necessarily wanting to engage sexually. The journey from curiosity to action varies and can be as unique as the individual.

Sexual Identity

Bi-curiosity is often seen as a phase rather than a sexual identity. It’s about exploring feelings and seeing what fits. Bisexuality, on the other hand, is a recognized sexual identity, comfortable with romantic or sexual relationships with both genders. Understanding these differences helps in figuring out where you might land.

Physiological and Psychological Aspects

Bisexual people often have a clearer understanding of their sexual preferences. Bicurious individuals may feel more uncertain as they explore what works for them. This journey of self-discovery is personal and unique, and there’s no rush to define it.

Commitment

Long-term commitment can look different for bicurious and bisexual individuals. A bicurious person might eventually settle with someone of the opposite gender, having explored their curiosity without pursuing it further. Bisexual people, comfortable with their preferences, are more likely to commit regardless of gender.

Exploring Your Curiosity

There’s no set timeline for exploring your bi-curiosity. It’s about being honest with yourself and assessing your feelings and actions. Dating apps can be a helpful tool for exploration. Make your intentions clear, and see what feels right for you. It’s a personal journey, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Are You Bisexual?

Whether you identify as bisexual or bicurious, the key is being comfortable in your own skin. Understanding the differences between these labels helps you make an informed decision about who you are. Take your time exploring, and don’t let others’ opinions sway you. Love and be yourself!
