Nestled in the southwest corner of mainland British Columbia and considered one of the most majestic parts of the region lies the Sunshine Coast, a 180 kilometer stretch of heaven on earth that boasts a mossy rainforest, a beautiful shoreline in the Salish Sea and is adjoined at the Coast Mountains from Howe Sound to Desolation Sound.

Townsite Brewery

Townsite Brewery is located along the beautiful Sunshine Coast and is a perennial favorite when it comes to microbreweries, located in the historic Townsite district of Powell River. To say that they are passionate about beer and the process would be an understatement and doing it against the backdrop of the beautiful Salish Sea only adds to the experience for visitors. Their Brewer Engineer, Cédric, is from a part of the world where beer reigns supreme – Belgium – and visitors to the microbrewery will quickly see why the nation excels at producing great beer. Plus, it is easy to see that he is happy to bring his enthusiasm and Belgian flair to the west coast of Canada.

What can visitors to Townsite Brewing expect? Well, an award-winning craft beer tasting session that is second to none is an absolute. As British Columbia’s only Belgian Brewmaster on site, you are sure to get an unparalleled experience that stands by their ‘heads down, boots on’ motto that strives to prove that their beer is worth the trip and the sip. There is also an informative tour of the entire brewery which is in the historic district of Powell River and if you make a weekend of the visit, you are sure to leave with more than a few stories to tell that will be the envy of all your comrades.

Persephone Brewing Company

Next up is the Persephone Brewing Company, another destination for fresh craft beer tasting on BC’s Sunshine Coast. Situated on an 11-acre farm and microbrewery in the Gibbons community in BC, PBC is run by a small, dedicated team of staff committed to maintaining the company’s vision of supporting the local agriculture, social interactions and community connectedness, partnerships, and capacity building for those with developmental disabilities.

Visitors will see firsthand their passion through the production of the finest quality craft beer (Gold medal winner, 2012 BC Beer Awards), the PBS farmhouse approach integrates onsite farming of hops – one of the main ingredients in beer – and other food crops in support of local food security, otherwise known as the farm to table and farm to barrel.

More Options to Drink Up on the Sunshine Coast

Of course, there are just two of the great microbreweries in the area. There are others, including Bricker Cider Company, Batch 44 at Sechelt, and Bruinwood Distillery at Roberts Creek. Choose any of these and tempt your taste buds!
