Folsom Street Fair 2026 Guide to Planning Your San Francisco Weekend

by Brian Webb  |  Sep 24, 2026  |  Time 16 mins  |

Leather harnesses, jockstraps, bare asses, pup hoods, and someone who put considerably more thought into his boots than his pants. Folsom Street Fair 2026 brings San Francisco’s leather and kink communities into the streets, with music, vendors, demonstrations, and plenty to catch your eye. You can arrive dressed for attention or keep your jeans on and see what interests you. Curiosity doesn’t require a costume.

The Sunday fair is the reason for the trip, but the rest of the weekend needs some thought. A late Friday, an ambitious Saturday, and a Sunday afterparty can leave you too tired to enjoy the event you flew in for. Add a hotel across town and shoes that hurt, and even the hottest outfit starts feeling like a poor decision.

Whether this is your first Folsom or your annual excuse to unpack the leather, here’s how to handle the essentials, choose your nights out, and make time for San Francisco beyond the next bar.

What Is Folsom Street Fair

Folsom Street Fair is an adult leather and kink street fair in San Francisco, on California’s Pacific coast. Expect fetish clothing, nudity, shopping, entertainment, and demonstrations that can put unfamiliar interests right in front of you. People come to socialize, explore, perform, and spend time with their communities. Some come to cruise. Others are perfectly happy browsing the booths.

The fair began in 1984, and its community roots remain central to the event. This year’s organizer information describes seven community stages alongside artists and vendors. Make time for a conversation with a maker or community group.

You’re entering a space shared by people of different genders, sexualities, bodies, and levels of experience. Treat them as people. Nobody owes a curious visitor a performance, an explanation of their relationship, or access to their body.

When and Where Is Folsom Street Fair 2026

Folsom Street Fair 2026 takes place Sunday, September 27, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The fair is in SoMa, south of Market Street. The Castro is a separate neighborhood, so staying near Castro bars still means traveling to the fair. Save the current map before leaving your hotel and identify an entrance, a meeting point, and somewhere to take a break.

Give yourself enough time to explore without racing toward closing. An earlier arrival doesn’t guarantee shorter queues.

Do You Need Tickets for Folsom Street Fair

The fair asks for a donation at the gate rather than a compulsory admission ticket. A $10–$20 donation is suggested with a sticker offering bar discounts. Confirm the discount terms onsite.

Paid parties and bar covers sit outside that arrangement. Read exactly what a ticket includes, especially when several events share a promoter or venue. A pass with an impressive name can still cover only one night.

Choose the party you most want to attend before buying backups. Factor in fees, transportation, food, and any clothes check. Overlapping tickets can make sleeping through Sunday impressively expensive. Follow promoters’ own purchase links and check entry conditions before paying.

Where to Stay for Folsom Street Fair

Choose a hotel around the weekend you intend to have. Castro nightlife, downtown sightseeing, and a quiet retreat point toward different bases. For a last-minute booking, compare the full stay total and cancellation terms, then map the journey back after your chosen party. Ask about luggage storage and late checkout rather than assuming either is included.

Beck’s Motor Lodge in the Castro

Beck’s Motor Lodge puts you close to Castro neighborhood life, making it a sensible choice if you want coffee, shops, and gay bars around your base. The hotel offers a second-floor sundeck, laundry facilities, and complimentary parking.

That parking is useful if you drove into town; leave the car there when heading to the fair. Build a SoMa journey into Sunday and allow time for a hotel return if you want to shower and change before going out again. Being near your favorite Castro bar won’t put you beside every Folsom party.

Axiom Hotel Downtown

Axiom Hotel is a boutique downtown option at 28 Cyril Magnin Street, beside the Powell Street cable car turnaround and near Powell transit connections. That location suits a weekend split between the fair and city exploration.

The hotel offers a 24-hour fitness center and Turn Café for food and drinks. Downtown access is the main draw here. Plan separate journeys to Golden Gate Park and the waterfront; a central address doesn’t make every attraction a short stroll away.

The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco on Nob Hill

For a more indulgent stay, The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco offers a Nob Hill retreat at 600 Stockton Street. Choose it when enjoying the hotel is part of the trip.

The hotel offers Club Lounge access for qualifying bookings. Check inclusions before upgrading. Budget for travel back up the hill after the fair. Your calves may have a different opinion of Nob Hill after several hours on pavement.

What to Wear to Folsom Street Fair

Wear gear you enjoy and can comfortably spend hours in. Leather, rubber, harnesses, sportswear, pup gear, and jockstraps all fit the occasion. Ordinary clothes work, too.

Try the whole outfit on before leaving your room. Sit down, walk, and check whether straps rub or hardware digs into your skin. If the boots are brand-new, this weekend is a poor time to discover their faults. Wear the shoes you already trust. Bring a layer for later and remember sunscreen on newly exposed skin.

Returning visitors can fix what annoyed them last time: the pouch that swung around, the waistband that chafed, or the harness that made sitting awkward. Small changes beat spending another afternoon adjusting yourself.

Nudity is permitted within the fair. Dress for the journey there and back, hotel common areas, and restaurants. Check individual party rules separately. And settle where your phone, ID, and room key will go before committing to an outfit with fewer pockets than a towel.

What to Bring to Folsom Street Fair

Keep your essentials compact and secure enough that you can forget about them while enjoying the day.

  • Physical photo ID and payment options. Don’t rely entirely on your phone.
  • A charged phone and compact battery. Save tickets, your hotel address, and the map beforehand.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses. Exposed shoulders need as much thought as exposed cheeks.
  • Earplugs. Carry them for amplified music at the fair and afterward.
  • Secure storage for your hotel key and valuables. Test closures while wearing the outfit.
  • A light layer and blister protection. Both are easier to carry than replace when needed.

The fair’s prohibited items include weapons, knives, sharps, glass bottles, and cans. Check current entry guidance for your chosen bag or container. Condoms and lube can stay with your personal weekend supplies; their usefulness doesn’t change the fair’s rules on sexual activity.

Seven Tips for Your First Folsom Street Fair

  1. Pick two priorities. Perhaps a stage and some gear shopping. Leave room for whatever catches your interest between them.
  2. Eat before arriving. Coffee alone is a poor foundation for hours of walking. Take a seated break before your feet start demanding one.
  3. Wear what feels right. Nobody needs to qualify for a jockstrap. Nobody needs to wear one, either.
  4. Get your bearings first. Watch a demonstration from a respectful distance. Save questions for a suitable pause and ask whether someone has time to talk.
  5. Make a real meeting plan. Choose a specific place and time. “Near the guy in the harness” will narrow things down very little.
  6. Give yourself permission to move on. You can attend alone, decline an invitation, or leave anything that makes you uncomfortable without offering a defense.
  7. Keep something for later. If Sunday night is your priority, allow time for dinner and a shower. If the fair leaves you satisfied, going to bed is also a valid plan.

Ask before touching anyone, including their gear, collar, tail, or equipment. A bare ass doesn’t give you permission to grab it. Neither does flirting earlier in the day. Get a clear yes, respect a no immediately, and avoid pushing someone to explain a boundary.

Give demonstrations room. Keep passageways clear and respect the purpose of designated community spaces. If someone needs assistance, alert event personnel; seek onsite medical care and a wellbeing space.

The fair prohibits public sexual activity; enforcement can escalate from a warning to removal and police referral. Plan hookups in an appropriate private setting.

Ask Before Taking or Posting Photos

Ask before taking an identifiable photo, then ask separately about posting or tagging. Someone may love the picture and still want it kept off social media. Avoid filming intimate or vulnerable moments for entertainment. A refusal is the end of that conversation. Put the camera down and enjoy something you don’t need to publish.

Getting to Folsom and Around San Francisco

BART connects SFO with downtown San Francisco; Oakland airport connection via Coliseum. Use the trip planner for your travel time and fare. A taxi or rideshare may suit heavy luggage or arrivals outside useful train service.

Muni handles local buses, streetcars, and Metro. From Beck’s, plan an inbound Market Street journey followed by the approach to your fair entrance. From Axiom, compare walking with a short transit trip. From the Ritz-Carlton, account for the hill and the return journey before deciding to walk both ways.

SFMTA’s 2026 fair advisory identifies street closures and reroutes affecting the 9, 12, 19, 27, and 90 Owl. Arrange car pickups outside the closures. Muni has overnight Owl buses, but check your specific route home.

The fair’s accessibility will offer seating at stages and food courts, accessible parking, water refill stations, and a wellbeing space at 1228 Folsom Street. Review those locations in advance; crowds and street surfaces still deserve consideration.

Sunday Night Afterparties

Choose your closer with Monday in mind. REAL BAD’s published rules make it a commitment once you enter. Deviants advertises livestreaming, which is worth considering if privacy influences your choice. Leave time between the fair and your party for food and changing. Chasing trade is more enjoyable when dinner happened somewhere along the way.

Things to Do in San Francisco Beyond the Fair

Friday, Saturday, or an extra day gives you room to see the city without cutting Sunday short. Choose one substantial outing and something nearby. You don’t need to cross San Francisco three times to prove you left the Castro.

See San Francisco From the Bay

A San Francisco Bay outing gives you distance from the street crowds and a wider view of the city. Blue & Gold Fleet offers a one-hour Bay Cruise and a separate 90-minute Escape from the Rock cruise around Alcatraz. Neither should be confused with a ticket to land on the island. Allow extra time for reaching the pier and boarding, and take a layer onto the water.

Explore the Waterfront and Pier 39

Pair a cruise with Pier 39’s sea lion viewing area at K-Dock, bay views, and lunch. Yes, it’s touristy. You’re allowed to enjoy a waterfront outing without pretending you discovered it. Give yourself an hour or two for a selective wander, longer if eating. Keep it simple instead of buying admission to every attraction you pass, and let wildlife sightings happen on the animals’ schedule.

Ride a Historic Cable Car

San Francisco has three cable car lines: Powell–Hyde, Powell–Mason, and California. The Powell lines work with a waterfront outing; California offers a Nob Hill ride. The standard single ride is $9, without transfers. Allow for a queue and treat it as sightseeing. Cable cars lack accessible boarding, so travelers who need step-free access should plan another mode. Save the fair journey for transport that suits its location.

Make Time for a Museum or Golden Gate Park

The California Academy of Sciences combines an aquarium, rainforest, planetarium, and natural history exhibits in Golden Gate Park. Set aside a half-day if you want time to enjoy several areas and eat without rushing. Planetarium passes require a separate reservation onsite under the current visitor guidance. This makes a satisfying Saturday plan before a hotel break and dinner. Trying to squeeze it between brunch and fair admission on Sunday makes much less sense.

Visit the Pink Triangle Memorial

Back in the Castro, the Pink Triangle Memorial stands near Market, Castro, and 17th streets. Its purpose is remembrance of homosexual victims of Nazi persecution, with granite pylons and a garden providing a place to pause. This is the permanent neighborhood memorial, distinct from the seasonal Pink Triangle installation on Twin Peaks. Give the site a few quiet minutes before returning to the weekend’s social plans.

How to Plan Your Folsom Weekend

Use this as a flexible starting point, including if you’re already in town. Protect meals, travel time, and a hotel break before adding another event.

DayA Workable Plan

Sunday, Sept. 27Eat before the fair. Explore at your own pace, then allow dinner and changing time before an optional closer.
