Matthew Presidente Unveils Album ‘Chosen Sun’: A Modern Take on Piano Rock

by | January 8, 2025 | Time 3 mins

Matthew Presidente, a British Columbian singer-songwriter and pianist, is set to release his highly anticipated album, Chosen Sun, on January 24, 2025. Featuring ten tracks, this full-band studio project showcases his signature blend of piano-driven rock and evocative storytelling. Collaborating with some of BC’s finest artists, Presidente has crafted an album that reflects resilience, love, and individuality.

This new chapter in Presidente’s career follows years of steady growth as an artist. With over 100 performances annually since 2022, he’s earned recognition for his dedication to music and the LGBTQ community. Previous releases, such as 2017’s Every Single Sin, solidified his place as one of Vancouver’s most compelling queer musicians. Now, with Chosen Sun, Presidente takes his artistry to new heights, embracing a deeply personal and transformative sound that resonates universally.

Fans can celebrate the album’s launch at a vibrant release party on January 24, 2025, at The Roxy in Vancouver. The event promises an unforgettable evening with a full-band performance and appearances by celebrated drag performers Androgynass and Wanting Moi. Tickets are available here.

Crafting a Personal and Transformative Album

Presidente’s journey to creating Chosen Sun was shaped by profound life changes. Reflecting on his decision to pursue music full-time during the pandemic, he shares, “It was a ‘life’s too short’ moment. I left a long-term career to fully dedicate myself to my passion.” This newfound focus allowed him to create an album he describes as “the most personal and transformative” of his career.

The shift to a full-band studio setup elevated the project’s sound. Tracks were recorded with grand pianos, live drums, and a rich array of instruments, including strings, horns, and synths. This meticulous approach results in lush, dynamic arrangements that underscore the depth of Presidente’s songwriting.

Themes of resilience, nostalgia, and community roots run through the album. While sung through a queer lens, the songs address universal experiences, making them accessible to a broad audience. “These are the strongest songs I’ve ever written,” says Presidente. “They’re catchy, empowering, and rooted in the universal desire to follow your passions.”

Queer Representation Through Music

As an openly queer artist, Presidente has always drawn inspiration from his identity and community. “I’ve played queer venues since the early 2000s, telling stories from a queer perspective,” he explains. Over the years, evolving conversations around gender and sexuality have deepened his commitment to amplifying LGBTQ voices through music.

Chosen Sun explores the collective experiences of the queer community. Songs like “Hundreds or Fives” delve into themes of survival and resilience, reflecting on the struggles and triumphs of LGBTQ individuals. “Queer people have had to fight to survive and thrive,” Presidente notes. “This song is about how that fight builds strength.”

Presidente hopes the album resonates with listeners on a human level. By blending personal reflections with universal themes, he aims to inspire connection and empowerment. “The album title, ‘Chosen Sun,’ reflects making your own choices about your future and embracing who you want to be,” he says.
