One of the standout features of cruising on the Oosterdam is the crowd it attracts. You won’t find yourself overwhelmed by hordes of screaming kids or retirees shuffling around in orthopedic shoes. Instead, the ship tends to draw a diverse mix of travelers, predominantly in their mid 30s to late 50s. It’s a vibrant, friendly atmosphere where you’re likely to meet like-minded people who share your interests and appreciate a good time without the chaos.

The Oosterdam doesn’t bother with gimmicky attractions like waterslides or rock-climbing walls. Instead, it focuses on delivering quality experiences—think stylish lounges, sophisticated entertainment, and spaces designed for genuine relaxation. This makes it particularly appealing for gay travelers looking for a cruise that offers both excitement and the opportunity to unwind in a welcoming environment.

When it comes to accommodations on the Oosterdam, there’s a variety to suit every taste and budget. Here’s the lowdown:

Interior Cabins: Cozy and Comfortable

If you’re the type who plans to spend most of your time exploring the ship or adventuring ashore, an interior cabin might be just the ticket. These cozy rooms come without windows, but they’re far from lacking in comfort. You’ll find a queen-size bed (or two twins), a flat-screen TV, ample storage, and a well-appointed bathroom. The decor is elegant yet understated, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Plus, with 24-hour room service and attentive housekeeping—including daily turndown service—you’ll feel pampered even in the most modest accommodation.

Ocean-View and Verandah Staterooms: Views to Swoon Over

For those who can’t get enough of the sea, an ocean-view cabin offers a window to the world, letting in natural light and providing picturesque views of the passing scenery. Waking up to the sight of the Mediterranean’s azure waters is a game-changer. If you want to take it up a notch, the Verandah staterooms come with private balconies. Imagine sipping your morning espresso while watching the sun rise over the Mediterranean—it’s pure bliss.

Suites: Indulge in Luxury

If you’re all about living that luxe life, the Oosterdam’s suites are where it’s at. These spacious accommodations feature separate living areas, larger balconies, and upgraded amenities like personalized concierge service and priority boarding. The decor is elegant and sophisticated, with high-quality furnishings and attention to detail that make it the perfect retreat after a day of exploration.

Location, Location, Location

When choosing your cabin, consider whether you prefer to be higher up for better views or lower down for a smoother ride (especially if you’re prone to seasickness). Adjoining rooms are also available if you’re traveling with friends and want to keep the party close. No matter where you lay your head, you’ll be looked after by a dedicated housekeeping team and hallway crew who go above and beyond to ensure your stay is nothing short of fabulous.

Shore Excursions: Dive into Adventure

Shore excursions are where the magic really happens. These are organized tours and activities you can join when the ship docks at various ports. While they’re an additional cost, they’re worth every penny for the convenience, expert guides, and unique experiences they offer. Plus, if you’re on a ship-sponsored excursion and it runs late, the captain will wait for you—a major perk.

Exploring the Old and New Forts was a highlight. The Old Fortress, dating back to the 15th century, offered panoramic views of the town and the sea. The New Fortress, although called “new,” was built in the 16th century and provided a fascinating glimpse into the island’s strategic importance over the centuries.

There was ample time to enjoy a leisurely lunch at a seaside taverna, where we indulged in Corfiot specialties like sofrito and pastitsada, accompanied by local wines. The island’s blend of Greek and Venetian influences made it a unique and delightful stop on our journey.

Day at Sea: Reflection and Relaxation

Another day at sea provided the chance to recharge and reflect on the incredible experiences so far. Many of us gathered with new friends to share stories over lunch or cocktails. Others took advantage of onboard crafts and workshops to learn more about the destinations we were visiting.

The wake of the Holland America Line Oosterdam is visible against the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The ship's movement creates a wide, frothy trail of churning white and turquoise waves extending far into the horizon. The clear sky meets the vast ocean, creating a serene, peaceful backdrop as the ship cruises through the calm waters.

It was a day to indulge in the pleasures of the ship, from spa treatments to simply lounging on deck and watching the world go by.

Italy: A Feast for the Senses

Sailing Past Stromboli

One of the most unforgettable moments was sailing past Stromboli, an active volcano located just off the coast of Italy. As the sun dipped into the ocean, we gathered on deck to watch the natural fireworks display. The volcano erupted with bursts of glowing lava, creating a spectacle that left everyone in awe.

Naples: History, Culture, and Culinary Delights

Our next port was Naples, a city bursting with energy and rich in history. The opportunity to hike Mount Vesuvius was a thrilling adventure. Standing on the edge of the crater, we could feel the heat rising from the earth and gaze out over the Bay of Naples.

Exploring Pompeii was like stepping back in time. The ruins of this ancient city, preserved by volcanic ash from the eruption in AD 79, offered a haunting and fascinating glimpse into Roman life. Walking through the streets, homes, and amphitheaters, you could almost hear the echoes of the past.

Back in Naples, we indulged in authentic Neapolitan pizza at a local pizzeria—because when in Naples, you simply must! The combination of fresh ingredients and traditional wood-fired ovens made for a culinary experience that was nothing short of divine.

Final Stop: Rome—The Eternal City

Our journey concluded in Rome, and what a finale it was. Many of us chose to extend our stay to explore the city’s countless treasures.

A few of the Coliseum from Palatine Hill, Rome, Italy.

From the grandeur of the Colosseum and the awe-inspiring beauty of Vatican City to the romantic charm of the Trevi Fountain and the bustling energy of the Spanish Steps, Rome captivated us at every turn.

Strolling through the city’s streets, savoring gelato, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere was the perfect way to end our Mediterranean adventure.
