Online dating has revolutionized the way people connect and find love in the modern era. However, for non-binary individuals within the LGBTQ+ community, the journey of finding meaningful connections through digital platforms can be laden with unique challenges.

Online dating, love it or hate it, is a pretty integral part of the “dating game” for many people, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. On the one hand, it’s great because you can see different pictures of someone and get an idea of their lifestyle, and often everything you would want to know about them will be in the bio!

Their sexual preferences, what they’re looking for in a person, as well as their gender identity, with pronouns often being featured alongside their name. For those who fall into the gender binary, that’s probably great! However, for non-binary individuals, it comes with a different set of struggles. 

Non-binary individuals identify outside the traditional binary gender framework of male or female. This can vary from person to person and is an interesting and diverse gender identity that takes on many different forms and expressions. Unfortunately, many online dating platforms still predominantly cater to binary gender options, forcing non-binary people to choose between misrepresentation or being excluded altogether. 

Misgendering, intentional or not, is a frequent occurrence, leaving non-binary daters feeling invalidated and unseen. This constant battle for recognition can erode self-esteem and make the search for a compatible partner feel like an uphill battle. Sure, one can say in their bio that they are actually non-binary and use they/them pronouns, but this is assuming anyone reads the bio at all. 

The LGBTQ+ dating pool itself can already be limited as it is, and this is really felt by non-binary individuals. Within this already restricted space, non-binary people often find themselves confronted with even fewer potential matches due to the lack of understanding or ignorance surrounding non-binary identities.

The scarcity of suitable partners can lead to frustration, isolation, and a sense of exclusion from the wider LGBTQ+ community. When there is already some unfortunate pushback from fellow trans individuals, often seen as “trans-light” or “trans trenders” dating other trans people feels intimidating or forms a sense of imposter syndrome. Luckily, it seems that attitude has shifted in a more positive direction!

Online dating platforms, while designed to foster connections, unfortunately, provide fertile ground for transphobia and discrimination. Non-binary people are often subjected to derogatory comments, fetishization, or outright rejection based on their gender identity. That, or they are not seen as anything other than their assigned gender at birth.

This bigotry perpetuates a harmful cycle of emotional distress and can discourage non-binary individuals from actively engaging in online dating, fearing further harm and rejection.

For some, disclosing their gender identity on dating apps can be a daunting task. Concerns about safety, including potential harassment or violence, loom large. Fear of judgment and misunderstanding forces some non-binary people to conceal their identities, leading to a lack of authenticity in relationships and a sense of disconnect from potential partners. Luckily, we’re seeing more platforms such as Tinder and Bumble offer many labels and descriptors for one’s gender identity and sexual preferences.
