Legally speaking, progress has been made in several regions of the world, yet numerous nations still classify same-sex relationships as a criminal offense. Certain places even maintain punishments as severe as life imprisonment or capital punishment for those convicted of such acts. Cultural attitudes can also be harsh, with hostility ranging from verbal abuse to violent attacks on LGBTQ residents or tourists. In some countries, anti-LGBTQ legislation merges with ingrained social prejudices, causing daily struggles and safety concerns. Staying informed about these realities is vital for personal well-being and to ensure a positive travel experience.

Those suspected of homosexuality could face fines, imprisonment, or corporal punishment, fueling anxiety within the local community. Activism is limited, and gatherings to discuss LGBTQ rights are nearly impossible. For tourists, there’s no guarantee of safety if authorities choose to enforce these laws. Brunei’s stance on queer matters remains restrictive and intimidating, overshadowing its otherwise serene cultural attractions.

Guyana

Guyana is the only South American nation that still enforces anti-sodomy laws, a stance rooted in its colonial heritage. Community-level acceptance varies, but many families insist on secrecy for LGBTQ members to avoid social backlash. Public attitudes often rely on conservative interpretations of religion and morality, compounding the legal threats. Behind the reggae beats and famous beaches, there’s a troubling disregard for human rights. Religious convictions and political inertia have slowed meaningful reform, leaving outdated colonial-era laws in place. Meanwhile, visitors who appear gender-nonconforming or who travel with a same-sex partner may encounter hostility in public places. Attempts at organizing Pride events do happen, but these gatherings are often kept low-key for safety reasons. For those who prioritize personal security, Jamaica remains a high-risk environment with little sign of quick improvement.

Jordan

Jordan is sometimes seen as more relaxed than other Middle Eastern countries, primarily because it doesn’t expressly outlaw same-sex acts. Yet, the state does limit “homosexual propaganda,” a vague term that can justify restricting LGBTQ visibility. Religion and tradition play a significant part in shaping local sentiment, and families often react negatively to anyone who deviates from social norms. LGBTQ people who exhibit any public affection can face legal trouble or hostility from the community.

Caution is advised for travelers, as open displays of queerness may put you at risk. Pride events are nearly nonexistent, and establishments that cater to LGBTQ patrons maintain a very discreet profile. Activists have faced police interrogation, so the environment is hardly welcoming for organizing rights-based movements. Despite the country’s storied archeological sites, visitors should weigh the potential safety concerns. Careful planning and awareness of social norms are crucial for LGBTQ travelers exploring Jordan.

Laos

Laos doesn’t explicitly criminalize same-sex acts, although no official protections exist to shield LGBTQ individuals from discrimination. The communist government controls most public discourse, leaving little room to gather accurate data about community attitudes. While arrests for gay activity are not typical, queer individuals have limited recourse if they experience prejudice in housing, education, or employment. This lack of formal legal structure leaves many residents uncertain about their rights.

Laos held its first Pride gathering in recent years, suggesting a gentle push for openness, yet the movement remains small in scale. Authorities are wary of any grassroots efforts, so events typically happen in private venues. Visitors might sense a subtle acceptance in some urban zones, but rural life can be more conservative. For LGBTQ travelers, it’s wise to tread carefully if you choose to visit. A safer journey often entails respecting local norms and keeping romantic displays discreet.

Lithuania

In recent years, accounts of raids on private events have surfaced, heightening concerns about personal safety. Travel to Malaysia demands caution, especially for those who prefer to avoid potential legal entanglements.

Nigeria

Nigeria stands out in Africa for its intensely strict laws against same-sex relationships. Both federal legislation and regional Sharia statutes in the north impose penalties that can include lengthy prison terms or even the death penalty, depending on the jurisdiction. The Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, passed several years ago, criminalizes not only ceremonies but also the support of LGBTQ clubs or organizations. Fear of violence, blackmail, and wrongful arrests pervades everyday life for many queer Nigerians.

Social taboos reinforce this harsh legal framework, leaving few safe spaces for the LGBTQ community. Activists and advocates operate in extremely difficult circumstances, risking severe repercussions if they speak out. Papua New Guinea

Same-sex relationships in Papua New Guinea remain illegal and could result in prison sentences of up to 14 years. Although enforcement of these statutes is inconsistent, the possibility of arrest creates constant anxiety. Historically, the country dealt with severe forms of tribal conflict, including headhunting, well into modern times, hinting at deep-rooted cultural and societal schisms. For the local LGBTQ community, life is often forced underground, away from the public sphere.

Government representatives have refused international calls to decriminalize homosexuality, citing cultural values. As a result, mainstream acceptance is minimal, and public events celebrating queer identity simply do not exist. Russia

Russia’s laws don’t outright ban homosexuality, but legislation targeting “propaganda of non-traditional relationships” has had a chilling effect on free expression. Brutal attacks against queer individuals occur, and legal avenues for justice can be limited, leaving victims without proper support. This viewpoint seeps into daily interactions, making life quite challenging for openly LGBTQ residents. Many queer-friendly businesses prefer to stay in the shadows, limiting social options. While metropolitan areas like Moscow or St. Petersburg may have some hidden pockets of acceptance, the broader climate remains concerning. Sri Lanka

Marriage equality or same-sex unions are not legally recognized, and LGBTQ citizens face ongoing prejudice in daily life. Meanwhile, the government’s stance appears sluggish, offering limited initiative to support gay rights. Even though small social networks do exist, they often remain low-profile to avoid confrontation with authorities. The tourism sector touts Sri Lanka’s lush scenery, but travelers should understand the possible complications if they express their identity openly. Discretion often becomes a shield against potential problems.

Uganda

Uganda has drawn global attention for its repeated attempts to pass harsh anti-LGBTQ legislation. The newest laws can include life imprisonment and, in some interpretations, the death penalty for individuals found guilty of specific same-sex acts. Religious leadership strongly backs these policies, citing moral and cultural norms as justification. In many communities, aggression toward queer people is both open and unashamed, making public life almost impossible for those who are out.

Advocates for gay rights have endured threats and violence, and some have been forced into exile to stay safe. Pride gatherings and community events are usually suppressed by the government, leading to frequent arrests and brutal crackdowns. International human rights groups continuously criticize Uganda’s leadership for these tactics, but local authorities tend to dismiss outside pressure. Traveling here as an openly LGBTQ person carries considerable risk. Until more tolerant views take hold, caution is essential in this East African nation.

Vietnam

Vietnam has stepped onto the global stage as an up-and-coming tourist spot, showcasing vibrant street food, scenic landscapes, and a fast-growing economy. While it does not criminalize same-sex relationships, laws do not grant marriage rights or robust legal protections for LGBTQ couples. Old-fashioned mindsets often persist, and individuals may face discrimination at work or home. That said, cities like Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi have begun hosting modest Pride celebrations, reflecting the energy of a younger, more open-minded generation.

The legal framework has softened a bit regarding same-sex ceremonies, yet such unions carry no official status. Parents sometimes push children toward conventional family paths, complicating matters for queer youth. Tourists may find small rainbow-friendly communities in larger cities, but in rural areas, being openly gay can bring stares or negative attention. For many, caution is the best approach. Over time, public attitudes might gradually change, but at present, Vietnam’s journey toward full equality remains incomplete.

Egypt (Dishonorable Mention)

Egypt has no explicit law prohibiting same-sex intimacy, yet authorities often use charges related to “debauchery” or moral violations to arrest and prosecute LGBTQ individuals. Ramping up since earlier political transitions, security forces monitor social media, entrap users, and conduct raids on suspected gatherings. This climate of suspicion has led to numerous arrests and public shaming, causing severe emotional distress for those targeted. Despite Egypt’s ancient history of recorded same-sex relationships, current public opinion largely condemns homosexuality.

Entrenched religious and traditional beliefs shape daily life, and approximately 95% of Egyptians polled in the past consider homosexuality unacceptable. LGBTQ travelers face potential harassment if they appear openly queer, particularly in conservative areas. While some private gatherings can offer a sanctuary, infiltration by authorities remains a risk. For many visitors, the famous landmarks come with the weight of knowing there’s little legal protection if problems arise. Careful consideration is vital before including Egypt in any travel plans.

Constitutional Rights Are Stronger Than You Think

Let’s start with what’s actually keeping marriage equality in place. 

Simple as it may be to think one person can snap their fingers and strip away our constitutional rights, that’s not quite how this works. 

New Phone, Who dis?

Let’s take it back to 1972’s Baker v. Nelson (talk about vintage drama).

In 1972, two men, Jack Baker and Michael McConnell, tried to get married in Minnesota. When they were denied a marriage license, they took their case to the courts, arguing that Minnesota’s law limiting marriage to different-sex couples was unconstitutional. The case eventually made it to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court’s response? They dismissed the case with just one line, stating there was no “substantial federal question”.

The Supreme Court had a one-line response – basically the legal equivalent of ‘new phone, who dis?’ 

Fast forward to today, and that same Supreme Court has not only recognized marriage equality as a constitutional right, but built an entire framework of protections around it.

The stark contrast exemplifies how LGBTQ+ rights were treated in the ’70s versus now.

Apart from Bostock v. Clayton County and Obergefell v. Hodges, there are other notable Supreme Court cases involving LGBTQ+ rights that we recommend you give a gander. 

1. Romer v. Evans (1996): This was a landmark decision where the Supreme Court invalidated a Colorado amendment that prohibited any governmental entity from adopting measures to protect LGBTQ individuals from discrimination. The Court ruled that the amendment was motivated by animosity towards homosexuals and thus violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
2. Lawrence v. Texas (2003): This decision struck down sodomy laws in the United States, ruling that they were unconstitutional. It overturned Bowers v. Hardwick (1986), a previous case that had upheld sodomy laws, marking a significant shift in the protection of the privacy and liberty of gay individuals under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
3. United States v. Windsor (2013): Before Obergefell, there was Windsor, which struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). This decision allowed same-sex marriages to be recognized for federal purposes, setting the stage for the full legalization of same-sex marriage in Obergefell v. Hodges.
4. Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission (2018): This case addressed the conflict between Colorado’s anti-discrimination law and a baker’s religious beliefs. The baker refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. The Supreme Court held that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed hostility towards the baker’s religious beliefs, thus violating his right to free exercise of religion. This case is often discussed in terms of religious freedom versus anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ individuals.

These cases, alongside Obergefell and Bostock, form a broader narrative about the evolving legal status and recognition of LGBTQ+ rights in America, each addressing different facets of discrimination and our rights protections.

They give us intel on what might happen, but it doesn’t meant it will…

What’s Actually Possible Under Trump’s Administration?

Well, things are far less terrifying than your aunt’s Facebook posts would have you believe…

The path to undoing marriage equality isn’t difficult – it’s like trying to get everyone at a Pride planning committee to agree on this year’s theme. 

Think of it like getting all the gays in your friends group to agree on which club you’re going to this upcoming weekend – nearly impossible…

First, you’d need a case that somehow makes it to the Supreme Court which is harder than it sounds. 

Next, you’d need the Court to not only agree to hear it but also to overturn their own relatively recent precedent.

And there’s nothing more that judges love than their own precedents. 

That’s about as likely as finding a top in a bathhouse. 

What We Actually Need to Watch

Now, here’s the real shocker, the one that makes you stop and think – “oh yeah, I guess that’s right.”

The real challenges aren’t coming through front-door attacks on marriage equality. 

They’re sneaking in through seemingly innocent “religious freedom” legislation and administrative policies. These are the paper cuts that can cause real damage – death by a thousand bureaucratic forms, if you will.

Take for instance the way some states have implemented religious exemption laws that allow healthcare providers or social service organizations to deny services based on religious beliefs.

The Conscience Rule

The conscience rule proposed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) aimed to expand protections for healthcare workers who object to providing certain services based on religious or moral beliefs. 

While it was intended to safeguard religious freedoms, it faced significant legal challenges and was ultimately blocked in federal court. However, similar policies have been enacted at the state level, allowing individuals and organizations to refuse services on religious grounds.

And, if you’ve been following along you will know that in this series we’ve been extensively covering what we need to do collectively as a group to protect our rights at the state level since federally we never receive help – and that’s regardless of Trump or Biden’s legislation. 

But, there’s more than this one instance of “religious liberties” trying to covertly steal our rights – those we have spent decades fighting for…

Those which, unless we can invigorate the younger generations, such as Gen-Z who are more progressive than millennials, yet somehow fail to see oppression objectively, mainly driven by the fact they are more likely to align with liberal values…. will be revoked, law by law, policy by policy, election by election.  

Sound crazy? Not seeing where we are going with this?

Wake up!

This is a WAKE UP CALL!

It is urgent we instill a sense of awareness and activism in younger generations of LGBTQ+ people. While they may enjoy rights that previous generations fought hard to secure, many do not fully understand the historical struggles behind our victories. 

Solution? Teach our history.

HB 1523 

As we face a resurgence of “religious liberties” legislation, like Mississippi’s HB 1523, that threatens to erode our rights, we must educate and empower them to recognize the subtle encroachments on their freedoms. 

This law, passed in 2016, does indeed allow various entities, including healthcare providers, adoption agencies, and businesses, to refuse services based on their religious beliefs regarding marriage, gender, and sexuality. 

The examples provided—such as doctors refusing transition-related care, adoption agencies declining to place children with same-sex couples, and wedding vendors refusing services to same-sex couples—are consistent with how the law has been interpreted and applied. The law remains in effect and has served as a model for similar legislation in other states.

Notice the bold and italics? Interpreted… that’s powerful. 

We have the power to change interpretation, but we must do so with fact – not opinion.

How to do so, you may ask? Teach our culture and how it’s developed. 

Generation Z has grown up in a time of relative acceptance, but complacency can lead to vulnerability. 

Teach them to think of fear without living in it. 

If we do not equip Gen-Z with the knowledge of our history and the importance of advocacy, they risk becoming unaware of the dangers that could unravel the progress we have made. Now is the time to galvanize their passion and commitment to ensure that our rights are protected and further expanded.

The impacts may seem small at first – perhaps one pharmacy declining to fill a prescription, or one adoption agency refusing to work with certain couples. But when these individual instances accumulate across multiple institutions and services, they can create systemic obstacles that effectively limit access to healthcare, social services, and other fundamental rights for vulnerable populations.

The Community Response (Spoiler: We’ve Been Here Before)

Remember when everyone thought civil unions were the pinnacle of our achievements? 

Our community has a long history of transforming defensive positions into offensive victories. From the Daughters of Bilitis, who skillfully took advantage of the political systems of their time while simultaneously challenging it, to modern organizations leveraging corporate influence to preserve our rights, we’ve learned invaluable lessons about playing the long game.

Let’s not become too comfortable with it…

Moving Forward: The Strategic Game Plan

Protecting marriage equality is not about passive defense. 

We require active reinforcement. 

To actively reinforce we must know that legal rights aren’t simply granted. We earn them through normalization.  (Just ask the Gay Activists Alliance, formed in 1969, which focused on direct action and civil disobedience to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, proving that passionate grassroots organizing can create significant change even in a time without today’s digital outreach tools — they didn’t even have TikTok to amplify their message!)

We must support state-level legislation that codifies marriage equality and associated rights. While federal protections are fantastic, state-level guarantees act like a good foundation garment — they provide essential support where you need it most.

As the mercury started to rise to ever higher temperatures, so did the excitement for Denver Pride 2023, hosted in Denver, Colorado! Denver Pride is a fabulous and vibrant celebration centered in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains. The lineup of events was full of fabulous drag shows, dance parties, street fairs, community events, and the main attractions, the Denver Pride Parade and Denver PrideFest! 

The event was held from June 24-25, 2023, in Denver, Colorado. People from across Colorado and the US came to attend the festive Pride events and to show their support for Denver’s LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms – especially within the current political climate in the United States, this year’s Denver Pride was about taking a stand. 

Denver Pride was a magical, fabulous weekend filled with plenty of laughter, tears of remembrance, a celebration of how far we have come, re-connecting with old friends, and creating new friendships, and last memories.

Denver Pride is a vibrant and exciting Pride weekend in Denver, Colorado, in the United States. People came to celebrate Pride in the Rocky Mountains that is legendary for its laid-back style and its open and accepting atmosphere. People came to experience the magic of the democratic state.  

For 2023, Denver Pride focused on inclusive activities and events celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, and activism for the drag and trans community. Throughout the weekend of events, there were drag shows, drag brunches, pool parties, community events, Pride festival, and the annual Denver Pride parade.

On both Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25, Denver PrideFest attendees were treated to a vibrant and diverse array of vendors offering a wide range of products and services. From food and refreshing beverages to unique arts and crafts, Pride merchandise, and community organizations, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The event was designed to be bright, fun, and family-friendly, welcoming people of all backgrounds and identities.

Denver PrideFest is a highly anticipated two-day festival that attracts visitors not only from across Colorado but also from the wider Rocky Mountain region and even North America. In fact, the estimated attendance in 2023 exceeded a staggering 535,000 people, a testament to the event’s growing popularity and significance.

The weekend festivities began with the energetic Pride 5K on Saturday, June 24, which set the tone for the exciting events that followed. The highlight of the celebration was the two-day Denver PrideFest held at Civic Center Park. The festival featured an impressive lineup of over 250 exhibitors and 30 food and beverage vendors, ensuring that attendees had an abundance of choices to indulge their appetites and explore various interests.

Denver Pride Parade 

On Sunday, June 25, 2023, the vibrant and spirited Denver Pride parade took to the streets, transforming the downtown core into a dazzling display of rainbows, glitter, and pure excitement. The anticipation was palpable as the parade procession commenced at 9:30 am, captivating the city with its captivating energy. 

A staggering crowd of over 100,000 enthusiastic spectators lined the 14 blocks of Colfax Avenue, extending from Cheesman Park to Civic Center, creating an electric atmosphere of celebration and unity.’

As the day unfolded, the sun radiated its warmth, casting a brilliant blue sky above the crowd. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, enhancing the joy and exuberance that permeated the air. Thousands of people filled the streets, eagerly awaiting the parade that was about to unfold. 

For approximately three hours, the city was treated to a magnificent spectacle, featuring a mesmerizing array of colorful costumes and elaborately decorated floats. Community groups, local businesses, sponsors, and marching bands all took part, showcasing their support for the LGBTQ+ community.

The parade was a true representation of unity and inclusivity, as a diverse array of participants made their way through the city streets. Political parties, rights activists, first responders, corporate partners, local organizations, not-for-profit groups, and sports teams all joined forces to honor and celebrate Pride, standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. A tragic incident in Colorado

A tragic incident unfolded at a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, as a gunman opened fire, killing five people and injuring 18 others. The shooting occurred on the eve of Transgender Day of Remembrance, leading to heightened concerns about the motives behind the attack. Although the investigation is ongoing, the mayor of Colorado Springs expressed that the shooting “has all the appearances of being a hate crime.”

The club targeted in the attack, Club Q, holds significant importance for the LGBTQ+ community in the area. It is considered one of the few safe spaces where queer individuals can gather and freely express themselves. The loss of this venue has deeply impacted the community, leaving many questioning how to move forward.

Support from allies and the broader community is crucial during such difficult times. The tragedy underscores the need for solidarity, compassion, and a collective effort to combat hatred. By standing together, communities can send a clear message that acts of violence and discrimination will not be tolerated.
