Katie’s Journey: How Sparkling Hill Resort Helped an Employee Thrive

by Brian Webb  |  Jun 20, 2015  |  Time 6 mins  |

Nestled in the heart of British Columbia’s serene Okanagan Valley, Sparkling Hill Resort stands as a sanctuary for wellness and transformation. Known for its luxurious spa experiences and breathtaking vistas, this iconic resort has become a haven not just for guests seeking rejuvenation but also for its employees striving to live their most authentic lives. For one team member, Katie, Sparkling Hill was more than a workplace—it was the setting for a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and acceptance.

The Okanagan Valley is celebrated for its natural beauty and leisure opportunities, but it also has a history rooted in conservative values. When Sparkling Hill Resort opened its doors in 2010, it unknowingly laid the groundwork for a workplace culture that would support and empower LGBTQ individuals. Katie’s inspiring journey is a testament to the transformative power of an inclusive community and a supportive work environment.

Born and raised in Ontario, Katie’s path to authenticity was anything but straightforward. Her story shines a light on the challenges and triumphs of being transgender in a world that often misunderstands and marginalizes those who walk this path.

Discovering Her True Self

Growing up in the small town of Paris, Ontario, Katie always felt different. Like many LGBTQ youth, she couldn’t quite put her feelings into words as a child. She recalls her earliest memories of wanting to emulate her mother, even at the age of four or five. By her early teens, Katie began to recognize her identity as a transgender woman.

“Before I was fifteen, I knew I wanted to be female,” Katie shared. “It was confusing because there wasn’t much information available back then. When I first gained access to the Internet, I started researching to make sense of my feelings.”

Her search for answers was met with a mix of support and misinformation, a reflection of the limited understanding of transgender issues at the time. Katie reached out to members of the LGBTQ community online, which provided her with the initial guidance she needed to begin her journey.

Navigating Family and Early Challenges

Coming out to her family was a pivotal moment for Katie. Like many parents faced with the unfamiliar, her dad initially struggled to understand, while her mom approached the situation with curiosity and support. Over time, her father’s research led him to embrace Katie’s identity, strengthening their bond.

Despite the progress at home, Katie faced uncertainty in public spaces and workplaces. During her college years, she began exploring her identity more openly by cross-dressing and attending support groups. Therapy provided her with a safe space to navigate her emotions and eventually helped her embrace her identity as a transgender woman.

Taking a Leap of Faith at Work

Katie’s professional journey brought her to British Columbia, where she initially worked in a masculine retail environment. Her decision to come out as transgender while working at Canadian Tire was a significant step. Though daunting, the experience gave her the confidence to pursue a new chapter in a more supportive setting.

When she joined Sparkling Hill Resort, Katie arrived as Ben, unsure of how her new colleagues would react. However, she saw the resort as the ideal environment to transition, given its predominantly female workforce and its culture of inclusivity. Within her first three months, Katie began confiding in trusted coworkers and her manager, who promised to support her journey every step of the way.

Building a Plan for Transition

The transition process at Sparkling Hill Resort was handled with remarkable care and sensitivity. Katie’s manager, Jana Gohl, played a key role in creating a structured plan that prioritized education and communication. Workshops were held for the management team to foster understanding about transgender issues, encouraging open dialogue and empathy.

“It was important to present the information in a way that helped everyone relate,” Jana explained. “We framed it as, ‘How would you feel if you were in this situation?’ This approach allowed our team to ask questions comfortably and embrace the process.”

The management team was not only supportive but proactive in ensuring a smooth transition. They communicated the news to staff thoughtfully and provided a clear timeline, allowing employees to prepare and offer their support.

The Day of Transformation

The day Katie officially began presenting as herself at work was met with overwhelming support. While there were moments of nervousness, her colleagues greeted her warmly.

“The first time I walked into a department as Katie, I was nervous,” she admitted. “But everyone was supportive. By the second time I saw them, it felt natural.”

The thoughtful planning and open culture at Sparkling Hill Resort ensured that Katie’s transition was celebrated rather than questioned. For Katie, this was a dream come true.

A Culture of Acceptance

Sparkling Hill Resort’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in its policies and practices. The resort’s employee handbook already included anti-harassment policies and protections for LGBTQ individuals, which simplified the process for management.

“We’ve always been a diverse workplace,” Jana noted. “Our monthly orientations emphasize respect and equality, so the foundation was already in place.”

This open-minded culture has made Sparkling Hill a welcoming environment for all employees, regardless of their identity. Katie’s experience is a shining example of how a supportive workplace can empower individuals to thrive.

Lessons for Other Organizations

Katie’s journey offers valuable insights for employers looking to create inclusive environments. From proactive education to clear communication, the steps taken by Sparkling Hill Resort demonstrate how organizations can support their employees and foster a culture of acceptance.

“It all starts with leadership,” Jana emphasized. “When senior management sets the tone, it’s easier for the entire organization to embrace diversity.”

For Katie, Sparkling Hill became more than just a workplace. It became a community that embraced her authenticity and allowed her to flourish.

Celebrating Authenticity

Katie’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusive workplaces. Her courage to live authentically and the unwavering support of Sparkling Hill Resort’s management and staff have left an indelible mark on the organization.

“I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out,” Katie said. “Sparkling Hill has been the perfect place for my journey. I hope my story inspires others to create spaces where everyone can feel accepted.”

Katie’s transformation is not just a personal victory but a testament to the power of inclusivity and the role businesses can play in fostering equality. Sparkling Hill Resort’s commitment to its values has set a shining example for others to follow.
