The Power of Pronouns: Why Proper Usage Matters for Everyone

by | January 2, 2020 | Time 4 mins

Language is far more than a collection of words. It’s a reflection of culture, identity, and respect. For non-binary and transgender individuals, the pronouns used to address them carry immense weight. They’re not just words but affirmations of identity, dignity, and humanity. This article explores why using correct pronouns is essential, the challenges surrounding them, and how adopting inclusive language can make a difference for everyone.

When the United States Supreme Court legalized marriage equality in 2015, it was a monumental step forward for LGBTQ rights. But the fight for full equality, particularly for transgender individuals, continues to this day. Despite progress, violence and discrimination against the trans community remain alarmingly high. The tragic reality is underscored by the countless trans individuals who face harassment, violence, and even death simply for being themselves. Using proper pronouns is a small but powerful way to combat this oppression.

Our society is steeped in gendered norms and stereotypes. Words like “male” and “female” often come with rigid expectations that don’t reflect everyone’s lived experiences. For transgender and non-binary people, being misgendered can feel invalidating and isolating. This makes pronoun usage not just a matter of semantics but a crucial part of fostering inclusivity and respect.

Understanding Pronouns and Their Importance

What Are Pronouns?

Pronouns are the words we use in place of names when referring to people. Examples include “he,” “she,” and “they.” For most, pronouns are assigned at birth and align with societal expectations of gender. But for many transgender and non-binary individuals, their authentic pronouns might differ from those traditionally associated with their sex assigned at birth.

Why Proper Pronouns Matter

Using the correct pronouns for someone is a basic act of respect. When we misgender someone—whether intentionally or accidentally—it can feel like a dismissal of their identity. Consistently using the right pronouns signals acceptance, validates someone’s experience, and helps foster an environment where everyone feels seen and respected.

Consider this: if you’ve ever been called by the wrong name, you likely felt annoyed or disrespected. Now magnify that feeling to encompass something as integral as your gender identity. That’s what many transgender and non-binary individuals experience every day when misgendered.

Breaking Free From Gender Norms

How Society Enforces Gendered Language

From a young age, we’re taught to assign labels to people based on perceived gender. Phrases like “man up” or “act like a lady” reinforce harmful stereotypes. Even in casual interactions, gendered terms like “he,” “she,” “mr.,” or “ms.” are often assumed without asking.

Interestingly, we already use gender-neutral pronouns more often than we realize. For example, when addressing an unknown pet, people might say, “Come here, buddy!” without knowing its sex. Or consider the word “they” in everyday sentences, such as, “Someone left their phone.” These examples highlight that inclusive language isn’t unnatural—it’s simply a matter of intention.

Fluidity of Pronouns

Pronouns aren’t static. In LGBTQ communities, gay men often playfully use “she” or “girl” among friends, creating a subculture that redefines gendered language. While this playfulness thrives in social contexts, it underscores the flexibility of pronouns and the potential for language to evolve.

Adopting Inclusive Language

“They” as a Universal Pronoun

The singular “they” is an elegant solution for inclusive communication. It avoids assumptions about gender and applies seamlessly to everyone, whether their identity is male, female, non-binary, or something else entirely. Even the Oxford English Dictionary recognizes the singular “they” as grammatically correct.

When in doubt, “they” it out. For example:

  • Instead of “Did he leave his jacket?” try “Did they leave their jacket?” This simple shift creates a more welcoming and inclusive environment.

Asking About Pronouns

One of the best ways to ensure you’re using the correct pronouns is to ask. While this might feel awkward at first, it’s a gesture that shows respect and consideration. A simple, “What pronouns do you use?” can go a long way in making someone feel comfortable.

For businesses and organizations, normalizing pronoun sharing in email signatures, name tags, and introductions can set an inclusive tone. For example, try introducing yourself like this: “Hi, I’m Alex, and I use they/them pronouns. What about you?”

The Impact of Misgendering

Emotional and Social Consequences

Misgendering—using incorrect pronouns—can have profound effects. It’s not just a simple mistake; for many, it feels like a rejection of their identity. This can lead to feelings of alienation, anxiety, and depression.

Studies show that affirming a person’s pronouns and chosen name improves mental health outcomes for transgender individuals. In contrast, repeated misgendering can perpetuate the societal marginalization they already face.

Building an Inclusive Culture

Creating an inclusive culture doesn’t require grand gestures. Small, consistent actions like using proper pronouns and correcting mistakes when they happen can make a significant difference. And when you witness someone else being misgendered, politely correct the speaker if you feel safe doing so. For example: “Actually, Sam uses they/them pronouns.”

Moving Forward With Respect

Dismantling “Us” vs. “Them”

Language has the power to unite or divide. When we cling to outdated norms that exclude or marginalize certain groups, we create unnecessary divides. By embracing inclusive language, we can begin to dismantle the “us versus them” mindset that fuels discrimination.

The Role of Allies

Being an ally isn’t about being perfect. Mistakes happen, and that’s okay. What matters is making a genuine effort to learn, adapt, and grow. If you use the wrong pronoun, apologize sincerely and move forward. Your willingness to respect someone’s identity speaks volumes.

Let’s Make Inclusion the Norm

Change starts with each of us. By adopting inclusive language and normalizing the use of gender-neutral pronouns, we create a world where everyone feels valued. Let’s challenge ourselves to do better, not because it’s trendy or politically correct, but because it’s the right thing to do.
