Coming out is no longer as much of a hot button topic as it was in years prior, but with visibility an important factor in the normalization of the LGBTQ+ community, HomoCulture now celebrates the celebrities who came out in 2022 and claimed their identities.
Aunjanue Ellis
Academy Award-nominated Ellis went public with her sexuality in 2022, claiming her bisexual status earlier in the year. He stated: “The way that I live my life, around the people that I live my life around, I am public about it. I’m very clear about being bisexual. I have a sweatshirt that says ‘Girl Bi’ that I wear everywhere.”
Willow Pill
Using Twitter, Willow announced her trans status openly this year. She was a RuPaul’s Drag Race season 14 contestant, and is currently fighting cystinosis. Pill stated about her decision, “It’s taken me a long time to come to terms with my transness because so much space has been taken up by my illness.”
Sawyer Fredericks
The Voice season 8 winner Sawyer announced his bisexual identity on Instagram.
Jasmine Kennedie
In February, Jasmine claimed on the show Untucked about her trans identity.
Rebel Wilson
Rebel announced her relationship with fashion designer Ramona Agruma via an Instagram post. ThePitch Perfect actress and comedienne is proudly accepting her lesbian identity since coming out this past June.
Jerrod Carmichael
Comedian Jerrod announced his gay identity this year during his recent standup special, Rothaniel, on HBO. His fans can expect more of his lifestyle to factor into his upcoming projects.
Ava Phillipe
In January, Ava Phillippe, daughter of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, answered a question on her Instagram account, mentioning her attraction towards people, regardless of gender.
Bosco
Drag Race star Bosco claimed her trans identity in February of this year. In a series of posts via Twitter, Bosco claimed the she/they pronouns and stated: “I’m a very private person but it would feel silly to not talk about this while I have this platform.”
John Cameron Mitchell
John claimed in an interview his nonbinary identity. To clarify any rumors, Mitchell added, “Lately I’ve been getting a little bit of flack [from some people saying] only trans people can play that role because it’s a trans role. I’m not trans, I’m nonbinary, but that’s a slippery slope because the character is forced into an operation and is not really trans.”
Jessica Phillips
Jessica discovered her queer identity this year. Phillips explains, “It wasn’t about changing identities, rather expanding my identity.”
Emeli Sandé
Emeli opened up about her status recently by revealing her relationship with a girl in March in 2022. When questioned about her bisexuality, she replied, “I’m not sure what I identify as but I guess so. I just feel like I should fall in love with whoever I fall in love with.”
Peach PRC
Peach PRC is lesbian. She expressed it publicly after her song, God Is A Freak, went viral on Tik Tok.
Janelle Monáe
Janelle is a pansexual singer and actress who is also Grammy-nominated. Monáe expressed herself as nonbinary on air with Jada Pinkett Smith for her Red Table Talk series on Facebook.
Trinity the Tuck
Trinity used Instagram as a medium to announce her identity as trans and nonbinary. For Transgender Day of Visibility, Trinity used her social media platform to set the record right, endearing herself to a new legion of fans.
Rae Williams
First introduced to fans on the streaming giant Netflix, Rae announced her bisexuality on The Ultimatum, a dating show.
Soloman Bates
Soloman is a noted young athlete who announced his sexual orientation recently. The Minor League Baseball player has been out to teammates since 2019, but in 2022 he came out to the world.
Sanjaya Malakar
The American Idol finalist of 2007, Malakar, is bisexual. Sanjaya expressed his sexual orientation on an LGBTQ podcast, The Adam Sank Show.
Jena Malone
Jena is a popular film actress with several Hollywood hits on her resume since she began acting as a child. Malone recently shared an Instagram post where she wrote and expressed her pansexual status to her followers.
Maybelle Blair
Mae was part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. She has recently announced her sexual orientation after maintaining her privacy on the issue for years.
