by | Sep 25, 2021

Navigating the journey of higher education can be uniquely challenging for LGBTQ+ individuals in the United States. Concerns about safety, acceptance, and support systems play a crucial role in choosing the right university. Fortunately, organizations like the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) dedicate their efforts to evaluating colleges and universities based on their inclusivity and support for the LGBTQ+ community. Their rankings provide valuable insights for prospective students seeking environments where they can thrive academically and personally.

In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the top-ranked universities recognized by the NSLS for their commitment to inclusivity. From the vibrant campuses of Rutgers University in New Jersey to the progressive initiatives at the University of Washington in Seattle, each institution offers unique resources and programs tailored to LGBTQ+ students. Whether it’s dedicated counseling services, specialized majors, or vibrant community centers, these universities prioritize creating safe and welcoming spaces for individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

By exploring the distinctive features of each university, prospective students can make informed decisions about their higher education journey. From the East Coast to the West Coast, and everywhere in between, these institutions stand out as beacons of inclusivity and support for the LGBTQ+ community. Join us as we uncover the top LGBTQ+ inclusive universities in America, and discover the diverse opportunities awaiting LGBTQ+ students across the nation.

Rutgers University – New Brunswick, New Jersey

It’s no surprise that the most ranked university is Rutgers in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The university proudly boasts about having the first openly gay dean and an on-campus center dedicated to educating the college population on social justice and the LGBT community. The NSLS says that this school has the safest and most inclusive ambiance of any university in America.

University of Washington – Seattle, Washington

The next school is the University of Washington. The university has put a limelight on the LGBT population. The fact that they have a major for gender & sexuality proves that they care about us. If they care enough to dedicate a major to our community, we can bet that the university will be a safe space for our kind. The O center on campus promises a sense of community, education, love, and advocacy for our people.

Ohio State University – Columbus, Ohio

If neither of these colleges is for you, try out Ohio State University. They provide services and resources dedicated exclusively to the LGBT community. Many of the services they offer were designed with us in mind. The campus also has an LGBT fraternity called Phi Alpha Kappa. Guys, gals, and non-binary pals are all welcome – so even if your sex doesn’t match your gender, you’re loved and welcomed.

University of Massachusetts – Amherst, Massachusetts

If you want something a bit colder (we mean climate, not personalities), you can try out the 4th option on the NSLS list – the university of Massachusetts. On top of rigorous academic programs, the university established the Amherst Stonewall Center in 1985 to provide physical and mental health services for our community.

Texas A&M University – College Station, Texas

But if you’re not a fan of freezing weather, you can head over to one of the biggest states in the country to a place the locals call “closet station.” Texas A&M has many social opportunities to keep you busy. The San Antonio has a Pride center that helps out queer, trans, and gender non-conforming students to make the best of their college experiences.

University of Maryland – College Park, Maryland

Another option that topped the list, coming in at number 7, is the University of Maryland. The LGBT equity center has inclusivity programming for those who are not accustomed to a diverse setting. They are conditioning the public to be more accepting of our community by helping them understand us better.

Montclair State University – Montclair, New Jersey

Montclair State is one of the most inclusive college settings in all of America. They have a multitude of social justice programs and an on-campus LGBTQ residential community. If you want to build your social or business network, this is where you need to be!

Metropolitan State University of Denver – Denver, Colorado

The next on the list for most inclusive is the Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the school set up the first LGBTQ resource center in West Colorado. It was founded in 1992 and has transformed the university into a safe space designed for the LGBTQ community to thrive.

University of Oregon – Eugene, Oregon

The last, but definitely least inclusive on the list, is the University of Oregon. They have an LGBT education and support services department on campus. The department is dedicated to setting up social and academic organizations that allow our community to interact together.

Which one will you choose and why? Let us know in the comments. We would love to know your thoughts about our list.
